Holiday Perler Bead Ornaments

Photos by Sara Magnolia

No matter how much I get ahead of the game with holiday prep, this time of year is inevitably the busiest — But all I crave are sweet family moments that capture the spirit. This year I decided to get the girls in on the festive prep by asking them to help make little perler bead ‘ornaments’ to adorn our holiday packages.

This craft is an oldie but goodie in our house. It’s virtually ‘mess free’, so simple, and great for even the tiniest of holiday helpers.

All you need are perler beads, some festive cookie cutters, a cookie sheet, and some string for when the decorating begins!

I love this activity because it really allows your little one to take the lead. Just make sure the beads aren’t layered too thick for easy removal. I have even heard of spraying the cookie cutter with cooking spray. I have never found this to be a necessary step, but it’s an option!

While your oven is heating up (set to 350!), let your little one fill the cookie cutters with perler beads.

Once they are satisfied with their creations, pop them into the oven for 10-15 minutes. You are looking for the beads to melt down to where they are nicely fused together. Then carefully take them out of the oven and rinse the cookie sheet and ornaments under cold water. I have found this is the easiest way to pop them out of their mold. A quick paper towel pat later and they are ready for some string!

As I mentioned, ours are going to be adorning holiday packages for family and friends. The perfect personal touch to this year’s gift giving. But they make great tree ornaments or even door hangers! The best part is this is an inexpensive, easy, and fun activity that your kids will love!

Wishing you all a beautiful holiday season!
