My Favorite Piece in Our New Home

Photography by Sara Magnolia

I don’t know about you, but I am a huge sucker for antiques! I love the warmth and character that they bring into a space, especially when they are mixed décor that is a little more modern.  I also love to think about their history and the era in which they were made.

This dining room table is one of my most treasured pieces in our new home! It was found by my friend in Atlanta, and the moment I saw it, I just knew I had to have it. I loved how old it was and all its beautiful details.

This piece is estimated to be 200 years old, so needless to say, it was a labor of love to sand it down to its original story, the way it was originally made. I just can’t image how many memories have been made around this table and I can’t wait to make more with my family.

Antiquing is an artform, and one that I am always trying to get better at! Over the years, I have picked up some skills and tips on how to hunt for great vintage pieces:

1.     First and foremost, trust your gut and go with what you LOVE. Adding vintage pieces to your home should be about your style and taste, so if you absolutely love something, go for it!

2.     We tend to gravitate towards the newer looking pieces – If the piece looks new, it probably is. One good way to tell is to look at the nails. The shiner they are, the newer the piece is.

3.     On that note, don’t be afraid of dirt and dust in the hardware – this is usually a sign that the hardware is original.

4.     Pay attention to the joints of the furniture. Instead of using nails, skilled cabinetmakers will use a dovetail. This means that the piece was handcrafted and not manufactured.

5.     Don’t be afraid to ask questions and do a little research on the authenticity of a piece. Sometimes, there won’t be a backstory and that’s okay — But often, a good antiques dealer will have some information they can share with you.

6.     Get your hands in there and touch the piece. Open the drawers, flip the item over, inspect it and really feel it out.

7.     Shopping online for antiques is a great way to go. Often if you email the seller and ask for additional images, they will send them to you. Remember, always double check the return policy before you purchase anything.

8.     Finding the perfect piece can take time. Don’t get frustrated if you don’t find a treasure on your first (or second) try.

Hope this helps you on your next shopping adventure! If you find an antique piece you love, make sure to share it with us on Instagram @TheHappyPlace.
