When contemplating a renovation, there are a ton of things to consider. And there are many resources online to help guide you in your first steps. But since I am on the tail end of another massive renovation project myself, I thought I would share some tips that I always incorporate when I’m tackling a new project!

Inside Home Renovation Tips

1. Can you reinvent any original details?

I will be the first to admit, when considering a renovation sometimes it feels easier to just start from scratch. And many times that's the answer! But when there is a design element or feature that you can breathe new life into, it often becomes that special detail that brings real character to your newly renovated space.

Hot Tip: Ask yourself what you love about your current space. If something speaks to you or stands out, spend some time taking it in with a fresh set of eyes!

2. Get organized!

No matter the size of the renovation I start with an itemized list of what I’m hoping to achieve. I go room by room and write down everything that is on my wishlist. From there I make smaller bullet points breaking down the details. This not only helps create your preliminary ‘checklist’ for the scope of work, but it also makes it easy to define your budget and keeps you on track for everything from selection making to delivery appointments. There are also a ton of great printable checklists online if you need a guideline. Choose one that speaks to you and dive in!

3. General Contractor? Or no general contractor? That is the question!!

This is one of the first questions I get when someone asks my thoughts on general contractors. First it’s important to be really realistic about your scope of work. There is nothing more deflating than investing time and money into a weekend warrior project that ultimately needs to be fixed or finished by a professional. The Spruce has a really comprehensive breakdown of the nitty gritty details that may need to be considered when you’re looking to take on a large-scale project! A good general contractor can be the best investment you make if you’re taking on a large scale project. Just make sure they are licensed and their subcontractors also carry all necessary licensing.

Hot Tip: There is nothing more reliable than a personal endorsement when choosing a partner in a home renovation project. Checking online reviews is the obvious first step, but I don’t stop there. Ask friends or family for recommendations. Treat this process exactly as you would vetting a caregiver or new employee. Ask about overall experience, quality of work, and (this one is important!) their experience with the G.C.’s subcontractors.

4. Become an expert on your materials.

This made my top Five because I find it to be SO IMPORTANT! Especially if you aren’t working with a general contractor or designer. Do a deep dive on all of your selections. Understand the durability, practicality, and maintenance necessary for all materials you are investing in. Consider what’s realistic for your lifestyle! For instance, if you’re inspired by beautiful, honed natural stone kitchens but etching and staining would drive you nuts, this may not be the material for you.

5. Follow your heart!

I always come back to this! And I often have to remind myself of this when I’m setting out to design a new space. Trends are inspiring and exciting, but there is nothing more beautiful (and long-lasting) than making selections that you truly love. Forget what’s ‘in’, surround yourself with what you love. Especially when you are making costly choices that won’t be easy to change. Lean into what reflects your style and personality and I promise you will never go wrong!

Happy Renovating!
